An elderly street cleaner in Jiangsu province has ignited some passionate online debate after being spotted looking absolutely exhausted, passed out sleeping on her tricycle in the middle of a hard day’s work.
On the day the photos were snapped, the temperature in Xuzhou city was under 2 degrees and the sky was cloudy. The elderly woman was seen wearing a red knit hat with her head wrapped in a blue towel, and a street cleaner uniform.
Upon seeing the snapshots, web users immediately did some serious soul-searching, calling on others to have more understanding for elderly workers in the future and worrying about whether they will be able to retire.
“‘When you become old, you’ll have someone to care for you,” who the hell came up with this bullshit slogan?!” asked one netizen.
“All those sitting in offices day after day, hoping for a pay raise, pay attention!” commented another.
“Thanks friends, now I want to be unemployed!” sighed one netizen.
“You won’t see this kind of thing on Xinwen Lianbo,” commented another.
“When I’m her age, I probably won’t be near retirement,” lamented one web user.
This seems to be another case highlighting the plight faced by many of China’s elderly who with only a fragile social safety net to fall on, must instead rely on family members to take care of them. Sadly, not everyone is so lucky. With a rapidly-aging population, there are more and more concerns about what will happen to China’s economy and retirement age in the coming years.
