A 29-year-old nurse from Shanghai surnamed Wang has pleaded guilty in court to murdering her boyfriend by injecting him with insulin after she suspected that he was cheating on her.
Their ill-fated relationship began when the two were in university. Wang and her boyfriend surnamed Li had planned to get married last January, but plans fell apart after some serious fights. While all this was happening, Wang was also looking after her boyfriend’s uncle; however the care soon stopped. This treatment cast some serious doubt into the mind of Li’s mother, who questioned Wang’s suitability for her son.
From there, things took a turn for the worse. On March 31st, Li was staying at his girlfriend’s place and she found out that Li had been in contact with another woman introduced to him by his mother.
Wang stayed up all night and slowly killed her boyfriend with a mixture of sleeping pills and insulin injections. After attempting to kill herself as well, she contacted her aunt and attempted to escape, with sunglasses in hand, but was later arrested, CCTV reports.
“I grabbed the sunglasses because I wanted to jump off the building and would feel less scared wearing them,” she said.
Wang’s lawyer insists that the case be judged differently to other murders as Wang and Li had a relationship and Wang attempted suicide, but Li’s family are insisting on the death penalty, even with Wang’s family offering financial compensation.
The story has created uproar online, with some netizens feeling angry about Wang’s actions and others saying that Li should take some of the blame for what happened. The issue of the wedding being postponed also sent many to question why such small matters and materialistic topics managed to turn a relationship so sour.
A sentence has yet to be announced for Wang and investigations are still ongoing.
