In yet another story showing that Shanghai’s metro doesn’t have a monopoly on bizarre public transit occurrences, an elderly woman crashed a public bus earlier this week because the driver wouldn’t give her change for a 20.
The No. 14 bus in Songjiang District is one of those without a ticket seller, requiring passengers to give exact change or over. That arrangement didn’t work for one elderly woman. She slipped a 20 yuan bill into the box and asked the driver to give her the change.
China News reports that Zhou Wei, the driver, tried to reasonably explain to the woman that isn’t something that he could do. He suggested that she return to the bus depot where they’ll give her the money.
It doesn’t seem like the woman liked that idea. Instead she decided to grab the steering wheel just as the bus was coming around a corner, causing the driver to lose control and crash into the side of the road.
None of the passengers were seriously injured in the crash and police have charged the woman with endangering public safety. No word if she ever did get her change back.
