Meet Liu Jiankang, he makes up the entire student body of Taohuagou Teaching Academy, the loneliest school in rural Hubei province.
His lone teacher is Liu Zhaoming, who explains that most children in the area have been taken to bigger cities by their parents where they are looking for better job opportunities.
However, Liu Jiankang’s parents were forced to leave their son back home after Spring Festival break.
Guangming Online reports that in the past the school had more than 300 students and 30 teachers, but now they are just down to one of each.
This is another stark example of the problems created by China’s drive to urbanize, as workers move out from the countryside, but many unlucky children get left behind, growing up without parents, or in this case, even classmates.
