A 24-year-old man heroically saved a family of five who were trapped inside the burning wreckage of their crashed car last month. Seconds after he dragged the last victim out, the vehicle exploded.
The incident took place on February 18th at 2:40pm on a Jiangxi highway. Police arrived on the scene shortly after to find several victims lying on the roadside. Ambulances arrived and one seriously injured victim was rushed to the hospital, unfortunately she died on the way.
Witnesses told officers that a young man had risked his life to open the car doors and rescue the family. When asked for his name and phone, the hero refused. Already busy with handling the case, the officer simply snapped a picture and made a report to his supervisor, Sina reports.
The county government ordered for a search to be made for the unnamed hero. The next day, two fellow villagers identified the man as Peng Yaocai.
One villager explained that he was driving by and noticed smoke billowing up from the crashed vehicle. “At first I thought that the hero must be a family member because of how desperate he seemed to save them, but it turned out that they were all strangers to him!” he said.
Witnesses reported that Peng spent two minutes rescuing the five victims from the car and moving them to a safe distance. Ten seconds after he had saved the final family member, the vehicle exploded. Minutes later nothing was left of the car except for a burnt-out frame.
The driver of the vehicle was named Cheng Jiping. His face was injured in the crash, requiring dozens of stitches. He told reporters that he and his brother-in-law tried in vain to open the two front doors. At the last moment, Peng arrived and helped to carry Cheng’s wife, mother-in-law and father-in-law out of the vehicle.
“Although my wife died, he saved us four. We won’t forget!” Cheng said.
The next day, reporters finally caught up with Peng Yaocai. “If I told you I wasn’t afraid, I would be a liar,” Peng said. “But, if I didn’t step forward to help, all of those five people would have died.”
After graduating from high school, Peng joined the Chinese Navy, where he is now a sergeant.
His act of heroism is just like that of a young man from Jiangsu province who risked his life to break into a crashed car to save the driver, his wife and their kid. Five seconds later, the vehicle exploded.
