The story of a 21-year-old Shandong man moving on with his cancer treatment and focusing on helping his mother find happiness has recently been pulling on heartstrings across China.
Wang Peihong was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July 2014. Since then, his treatment has exhausted all of his family’s savings. 14 rounds of chemotherapy alone have cost the family over 400,000 RMB.
Wang’s dad passed away in a car accident back in 2011. Since then, his mother, Feng Tiancai, has been the single breadwinner for the family, earning money by growing vegetables in a private garden, People’s Daily reports.
After her son’s illness, Feng has also received help from a kindhearted relative named Wang Zhaotai. He helps her look after Wang, as well as Wang’s 80-year-old grandmother.
On February 7th, Wang came down with a sudden fever. “I thought I wasn’t going to make it,” he told reporters. This experience made him begin to reconsider if there really was a point to continuing treatment. However, he was sure about one thing:
“If I quit chemotherapy, I hope that I can do something for my mom. I can’t leave unless I make sure that she finds happiness.”
Finally, Wang made his decision. He would stop treatment and instead invest what time he had left into funding a wedding for his mom and his new dad, Uncle Wang.
At first, his mother couldn’t agree to Wang’s idea, believing that they had to keep fighting; however, her son eventually persuaded her that it was for the best.
Wang then decided to launch a fund-raising campaign via WeChat. The post was quickly shared by numerous warmhearted netizens with many writing to Wang to tell him that they were willing to help to make his dream a reality.
Feng’s wedding was held last Friday in a village outside of Shouguang, Shandong province with a number of family, friends and contributors in attendance.
Since the photos of Wang’s mother in her wedding gown went viral, they have moved thousands of netizens’ hearts, with many sending their blessings to both him and his mom.
According to Sina News, two days after the wedding, Feng called reporters to tell them that Wang had left their home, leaving only a letter behind:
By the time you read this letter, I will have left. I want to relax a bit, please do not search for me.
When I saw you wearing that wedding gown, I felt a burden lifted from heart. Mom, you were truly a beautiful bride. In these 21 years, I’ve done nothing for you. But, what I can do now is to help find you a good man that you can spend the rest of your life with happily.
Mom, you’ve been worried about me too much. I don’t want to trouble you any longer. I’m grateful that you’ve taken care of me and brought me up for these past 21 years. Thank you. I wish you two a long and happy life together.
