A photograph showing a Chinese surgeon cradling bags of blood has gone viral with netizens across the country voicing concern with the hospital’s less-than-sophisticated method of warming blood.
Ifeng News report that the surgeon, named Zhang Run, works at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University in Henan. A patient there urgently needed a large volume of blood, unfortunately the blood bags were at a chilly 4 degrees Celsius.
To solve the potentially life-threatening problem, Zhang took the bags and cradled them against his chest.
The remarkable moment was captured by the head of operating room, Wang Su, who later posted the photo on his WeChat with the caption: “I am moved that I have this kind of person as my colleague.”
While some netizens agreed with Wang’s assessment, calling Zhang a “hero,” more wrote in to question whether a doctor’s body heat was really the optimal way to warm up blood.
“What kind of cheap hospital is this? Why not buy some actual equipment?” questioned one netizen.
A blood warmer should definitely be on the shopping list, but this story once again shows how quick-thinking Chinese doctors and nurses are able to overcome a lack of advanced equipment by simply putting their bodies and sometimes breasts on the line.
