Selina Jen, best known as the “S” in the ultra-successful Taiwanese girl group S.H.E., first became famous in 2000 after winning a high-profile singing competition. But more than her music, it was her personal story that has most inspired her fans.
Five years ago, Selina was severely burned by an explosive accident on set while filming a TV drama. At the time, she was engaged to Richard Chang, a notable lawyer, who was later praised for going through with the marriage, despite his bride’s noticeable burns. Her marriage thus served as an inspiration to many young Chinese women.
“If I was burned, maybe I would become depressed, but Selina never gave up,” a Selina fan told Shanghaiist. “She gives me hope.”
However, while the couple was able to overcome Selina’s accident, they apparently were not able keep themselves from slowly drifting apart, announcing their divorce last Friday over Facebook:
In separate Facebook posts, they both blamed themselves for the sudden break-up of their almost five-year-long marriage. Selina wrote that they were both “really unhappy as man and wife” and were unable to bridge the gaps between one another. She also blamed herself for being too focused on her career rather than on being a good wife for her husband.
Meanwhile, Chang echoed that the two would be happier as siblings as they had little in common as a married couple (he likes sports, she likes dramas).
Immediately after the announcement, Taiwanese tabloids began digging for juicer reasons for their break-up. Some speculated it was because they were childless, others that it was due to infidelity on Chang’s part. Reports surfaced from last March saying that he was seen visiting a KTV alongside a curvaceous 22-year-old model Jessie Zhuo who describes herself as “A naughty girl from Taiwan.”
Chang quickly squashed the reports and told reporters that “I will sue if it becomes too much.” Zhuo also denied knowing Chang, saying that she had met him only once at a school function.
For her part, Selina took to Facebook again on Monday to thank her bandmates along with her estranged ex-husband for their support over the years, translation via Straits Times:
“On the way home, my heart was full of gratitude. All the way, when I experienced different scenery in my life, my family, Hebe, Ella, my friends and Richard never let me face it alone,” she wrote. “I am a very lucky person. I will wear my battle dress and keep on running!”
This one goes out to Selina and Richard:
