A restaurant owner in Guangxi was detained over the weekend for “hindering law enforcement” after he responding to chengguan advances on his stuff on the sidewalk by giving one of the officers a kiss on the lips.
BTV reports that the incident took place on Jianglan Road of Liuzhou city. Seeing the things taking up parts of the sidewalk at 11:30 a.m., China’s most unpopular public officials ordered the noodle restaurant owner to clear them up.
At around 1:00 p.m., officers returned to find that the owner had not removed everything. Subsequently, they tried to seize the items still in the street. To resist, the 26-year-old owner surnamed Huang planted himself on a table, grabbed a few stools and tried to fight them off. In a final effort to save his stuff, he even gave an officer a provocative peck on the lips.
From there, things got a bit less romantic with two female waitresses rushing out to join the fray, armed with chairs and spoons. In the fracas, several officers ended up sustaining various minor injuries.
Huang was detained for eight days, while the two other perpetrators were released because they were both pregnant, the local police said.
Admittedly, this is probably the most polite way that we have seen a Chinese vendor combat the scourge of the chengguan. More often, instead of kisses and chairs, their weapons are watermelons and knives.
