Hawk-eyed police in Anhui managed to spot a school bus driving around last week with 43 more kids on board than regulations and good sense would allow.
Presumably, even the police were a little shocked when they counted out 62 students getting off the bus, with a maximum capacity of just 19 passengers.
Sina reports that police confiscated the bus and arrested the driver. A whole convoy of vehicles then had to be called in to take the kids back home.
School bus overcrowding has become a serious problem in China, especially in more rural areas where decent school transportation options are often simply unavailable. The issue came to the forefront back in 2011 following a series of school bus accidents. At least 17 preschoolers were killed in one accident in Gansu province involving an overloaded bus, sparking national outrage.
However, things seem to be getting better, while buses are still falling into holes and driving without wheels, fewer school bus accidents have made headlines recently. And this instance in particular was a real improvement from 2011 when 66 kids were spotted packed into a 8-seat minivan.
