Taiwanese singer and actor Nicky Wu and Chinese actress Liu Shishi got hitched in Bali on Sunday, in a lavishly traditional ceremony fitting for the two stars of a popular time-travel drama.
45-year-old Wu rose to fame as a member of the Taiwanese boy band Little Tigers before switching over to acting, mainly in the mainland. That’s how he met 29-year-old Liu Shishi, his co-star in the 2011 hit drama “Scarlet Heart.”
Wu had to go through quite a bit of trouble to marry his sweetheart. Due to some technical issues, he was forced to legally marry his former wife Chinese actress Ma Yashu, and then divorce her once again, the Straits Times reports, citing Taiwan Apple Daily.
In an interview with a Bali newspaper on Monday, Wu’s mother spoke about the couple’s lavish wedding and her son’s unusual marriage issues. She confirmed that Wu and Ma never held a formal wedding during their three-year marriage. They also failed to register in Taiwan, after Wu was “interrogated like a criminal” just for submitting an application for a Taiwan entry permit for Ma. The two divorced (for the first time) in 2009.
But don’t worry much about Ma, she’s now married to an Australian billionaire.
Wu and Liu’s wedding reportedly cost 20 million RMB. 350 guests were invited to their wedding feast held at Bali’s luxurious Avana Resort and Spa.
At the ceremony, Wu declared his love by saying:
“I’ve complained to heaven more than once about hardships in my life. I’ve complained that he treated me unfairly, gave me unhappy experiences. Now, I’ve come to realize why it was so. Because he wanted to save the best for me. I will do as you say.”
The words moved Liu Shishi to tears.
Online, netizens have expressed their best wishes to the newlyweds, while also admitting that their wedding doesn’t quite measure up to that of last year’s “wedding of the century” held by Huang Xiaoming and Angelababy in Shanghai. Generally, though netizens are optimistic about these two crazy kids’ chances.
However, love is a fickle thing, as Shanghai and celebs know well. Earlier this month, Taiwanese pop star Selina Jen announced the end of her almost five-year marriage to Richard Chang, shocking naive fans, who believed their relationship to be “perfect.”
But true love can always just begin anew. Take Rupert Murdoch’s ex Wendi Deng for example.
