A 43-year-old man proposed to his girlfriend, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last month, inside her own hospital room last week, touching the hearts of many across China.
Originially from Sichuan, Peng Xin worked as an air-conditioner repairman in Wuhan, making just 1,500 yuan ($238) a month, when he first met Yang Liu, eight years ago, NetEase reports.
Yang was raised by her grandmother after her parent’s divorce. Despite the couple’s mutual feelings, Yang’s grandma did not approve of their relationship. She thought that Yang deserved a better man than Peng, a migrant not making good money.
In 2010, Yang’s dad and grandma passed away, and her mom was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. Yang began living with Peng at his rented apartment. Peng thought that once he earned enough money to buy them their own home in the city, he would ask Yang to marry him.
Unfortunately, Yang was also diagnosed with breast cancer last month, and she was told that it was already too late for surgery. Peng took off from work and has looked after Yang day and night ever since.
When Yang’s condition became stable after a month of treatment, Peng approached Yang’s doctor and told him his proposal plan.
“I’ll be her husband no matter how long she makes it,” Peng says. “I’ve come from Sichuan to work in Wuhan. Even with her family’s objection to our relationship, she chose to stay with me. Now, she’s sick. I need to fulfill my promise and marry her.”
The hospital staff were moved by the couple’s story and made arrangements for the proposal, as well as making donations for the wedding.
“I know there are lots of difficulties awaiting us, but I will shoulder the responsibility and take good care of her for the rest of her life,” Peng adds.
As we reported last week, China’s cancer rate is rising at an alarming rate, 4 million people were diagnosed with cancer in China last year, while almost 3 million died from it. That leads to quite a few hospital ward proposal stories:
In 2014, a woman in Guangzhou proposed to her boyfriend, who had been diagnosed with melanoma, as he lay in his hospital bed.
A bit further back, a 24-year-old man quit his job and left his hometown to take care of his 25-year-old girlfriend who had been diagnosed with cancer. Not longer after, the two lovebirds officially tied the knot.
