Last Friday in Tianjin, funeral service workers held a fake funeral to allow people to experience death. Participants even got to lay down in coffins and experience “death” itself without the permanent commitment. Pretty good, eh?
You might think this strange, but this phenomenon is somehow becoming a trend in China. For example, in Chongqing they have even turned it into a strange sort of game where you can lie with someone else in pitch blackness and see how long you can last.
For the coffins in Chongqing, two coffins are available, one labelled “drunk driver” and the other “in a drunken stupor”. It seems the “in a drunken stupor” coffin was more popular overall, as it could hold two people. So lovers can even experience death romantically I guess?
A Mr. Yang from Nananqu District in central Chongqing told reporters about his own experience in the coffin. Having staff close the coffin lid turned the world pitch black in the blink of an eye, and despite knowing there were plenty of people outside the coffin the sense of dread was unavoidable and he broke out in cold sweat, NetEase reports.
But hey, it’s all good clean fun right? Perhaps this fake coffin phenomenon will help people to appreciate life outside of a cramped wooden box more.
