An upcoming BBC Two documentary will narrate a rich Chinese fashion designer’s elected Cesarean experience at The Portland, Britain’s only private luxury maternity hospital.
According to Netease, Beijing-born designer Lu Hui chose The Portland after discovering that many of the rich and famous had also gone there to give birth. Her story will be told in the documentary due to air next week called Five Star Babies.
“I was Googling which is the best hospital to have a baby and The Portland is the top one that popped out.” said Hui. “English kid sounds very posh, that’s why I choose here.” She also admitted that the reason why she chose Cesarean is because she’s too afraid of the pain that comes with natural labor.
“When I first met my consultant she said it would cost around £20,000, but after so many scans and blood tests it’s another £10,000, so total it is £30,000 pounds,” said Hui. The final bill rose to £40,000 (around 400,000 yuan) after factoring in her four-night stay and associated room service.
At The Portland, everything meets the standards of a 5-star hotel. All mothers have their own private suite including a bedroom, bathroom. sitting room and 24-hour room service. Mothers and their families can also order food like lobster and champagne, as well as afternoon tea to enjoy in their suite.
When she’s asked what she would have done if she wasn’t able to afford the first class maternity service, she answered “Are you kidding me? I’d have died straight away!” then added “I am kidding, if I had no money or less money than I have now I would work really hard.
In 2014, Hui founded her fashion brand SUKI London after graduating from the London College of Fashion. After Chinese media reported on the story, many netizens were divided over the issue.
“By spending merely 400,000 RMB, you can get your son a British citizenship as well as deluxe treatment and be on the news and documentary for greater marketing effect? It’s like killing ‘three birds with one stone’! What a superior idea! It’s probably more expensive to get your son a Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou hukou!” commented one netizen.
“This is just blind worship of all things foreign,” said another who took objection with Lu’s medical tourism.
