A Chinese mother who committed suicide in order to pay for her son’s hospital treatment is reported to have died in vain after the policy was revealed to have expired long before her death.
The 63-year-old died after falling nine floors from her son’s balcony in a poor neighborhood in Shenzhen. Her last words are said to have been, “I’ll be fine, I will help you get the money you need.”
In 2005 her son was diagnosed with Bechterew’s disease, a type of arthritis that creates pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. Ten years after his diagnosis, the son eventually revealed his condition to his family. As he approaches the final stages of the disease, he can no longer move his hips or turn his head.
Her son has been unemployed since leaving his job as a restaurant manufacturer to receive treatment. Money was tight and his mother, who was becoming increasingly worried, became distraught and remembered a life insurance policy she had earlier bought.
The son said he believes his mother committed suicide on March 22 for the 300,000 yuan insurance payout, but the policy had already expired in November of last year. A clause in the contract also prevented a payout from taking place in the event of death by suicide.
The son’s response to his mother’s shocking and sudden death has been heartbreaking. He has said several times that he wishes he could die instead so that his mother wouldn’t have resorted to such an extreme measure.
