Seven people have been detained after a particularly nauseating video went viral over the weekend, starring a demolition crew beating up a group of cowering villagers.
The incident occurred in a village outside of Haikou city, Hainan. In the video, helpless villagers are seen trembling against the wall, attempting to shield themselves, as men dressed in black take swipes at them with batons and clubs.
The local government reacted quickly once the sickening footage was released, apologizing in a press conference on Saturday and announcing that seven crew members have been detained and the team leader has been dismissed.
Tencent reports that prior to the incident villagers had sold their farmland for development, but apparently the buildings that were constructed were illegal, and a government-led demolition crew arrived to take them down.
Villagers refused to let the buildings be demolished without a fight, throwing rocks and bricks at the crew, which included police and chengguan, sparking a harsh response.
As you might expect, netizens are incensed, calling for equally harsh penalties to be given out to the demolition crew members:
“Dismissed? Detained? These men should be executed,” commented one netizen.
“The villagers should be allowed to beat them bloody as punishment,” agreed another.
“What kind of country do we live in that something like this could happen? Where were the police?” asked another Weibo user.
“Blame the demolition crew, but also blame the local government, I’m sure they were behind this,” another netizen wrote in.
