Drivers in Foshan got caught the surprise on their commute to work yesterday morning with the sudden appearance of two street racing ostriches on a busy highway.
Many drivers chose to slow down and take some pictures of the giant birds. Unfortunately, not all drivers exercised enough caution as one of the runaway ostriches was killed at around 8:55 a.m. in a car accident after fleeing for 2 kilometers, Tencent reports.
The other ostrich didn’t stop to mourn its companion, making it another 5 kilometers before some resident tried to make a citizen’s arrest and capture the big bird. Tragically, the ostrich was injured while being wrangled. When police arrived at the scene around noon, it was drawing its last breaths.
Officers brought the bodies back to their owner. He revealed that last November he had bought nine ostriches for just 650 yuan each. Unfortunately, six were stolen and another one had died. On Wednesday morning, he forgot to close the door to their cage behind him and could only watch helplessly as his only remaining ostriches ran off to meet their fate, racing in the street.
RIP.
