Creeps are apparently everywhere on Shanghai public transportation these days, with a 14-year-old school girl alleging that her taxi driver sexually harassed her during her ride home yesterday.
According to NetEase, the 14-year-old took a taxi home from school early because she was running a fever. On the way home, the driver suddenly began to put his hand on the girl’s thigh.
The girl snapped a picture of his hand on her leg and quickly messaged her mom on WeChat. “Mom, the driver keeps touching me… I’m almost home. Come and get me quick,” she wrote.
When the taxi arrived at the girl’s home, her parents were waiting. They angrily accused the driver of molesting their daughter. The driver denied that anything had happened and quickly sped away with the passenger door still open.
The driver belonged to Shanghai’s Jinjiang Taxi Company, he has since been fired. The company has apologized for the incident and says it will improve the training of its drivers. We can’t wait to see what kind of anti-creep training measures the company comes up with.
These kinds of incidents just go to show that perverts and criminals don’t just drive for Didi or Uber, but also operate within the traditional taxi industry as well. Earlier this month, a woman was robbed and killed by her Didi driver in Guangzhou. The incident sparked a city-wide crackdown on the ride-hailing app, which resulted in 8,000 drivers getting suspended. The next week, a Didi driver picked up a female passenger without his pants on. Obviously improved training is needed.
Of course, some taxi drivers are totally awesome, like this one in Shenyang:
