After undergoing cupping therapy for a month, a 63-year-old man from Sichuan is feeling the effects, namely seven gruesome marks on his back.
Suffering from high cholesterol and some other minor ailments, he dropped by a massage shop in Chengdu in May for a one-hour cupping therapy session. Whenever he had a sore neck, he returned for another go. “The treatment will cure you if you stick to the one-month cupping treatment,” the clerk recommended, ETtoday reports.
Even though blisters appeared on the cupped area after 10 days of cupping, the man insisted on going on with the month-long treatment, breaking the blisters and cleaning the wounds out with salt water, China Times reports.
Finally, after a month of this, he was taking a walk on Monday night and started to feel awful. He was rushed to the hospital where doctors found he had a temperature of 39.7 degrees Celsius.
He was admitted to the hospital with a high fever. When doctors were examining him, they were shocked to discover seven giant marks on his back. It turns out that after popping the blisters, the gruesome area had become infected, according to Apple Daily. If he had delayed going to the hospital any longer, it could have turned into a life-threatening case of blood poisoning.
Netizens on Weibo were absolutely dumbfounded by this horrifying episode, with many blaming the shop for misleading its clients:
“Doesn’t that hurt like hell? How can he continue to keep undergoing cupping therapy,” one netizen wondered.
“It is incredibly irresponsible of the shop to ask him to go through the cupping treatment EVERY DAY,” another wrote.
“Cupping therapy has been proven to be effective, but it’s definitely not ok to do it continually,” one web user warned.
