Last Wednesday, a man was found by police lying unconscious behind a shrub near a railway track in Hangzhou, his feet bleeding and infected.
The officer quickly called for ambulance and the the young man woke up briefly to ask for water. He said that he had been wandering aimlessly and hadn’t eaten for three days. He had no money for food, spending it all during a feverish 6-day long gaming marathon at an internet cafe, Hangzhou Daily reports.
When police contacted the 19-year-old guy’s parents on phone, the father initially said that he didn’t want his son back. After thinking about it some more, he requested that his son be sent home. The teenager didn’t care about anything except for online gaming. He had run away from home 10 days ago, the father told police.
Netizens online generally voiced their sympathy for the father, commenting that his son was just a hopeless loser. Some also wondered how 6 days spent at an internet cafe could really hurt your feet so badly.
Though its lucky he got away with only a little foot-rot. The officer thinks that if the man had not been spotted in time, he could have died.
The obsessive devotion of China’s hardcore gaming community has already been well-documented. Last year, a pair of parents in Zhejiang were surprised and relieved to find out that their daughter wasn’t dead; she had just spent the last 10 years living in various Hangzhou internet cafes. It’s the kind of behavior that makes taking a dump in front of your fellow gamers or going to see the new Warcraft movie seem fairly normal.
Living the dream.
