Netizens were recently bemused by pictures of a DIY solar-powered vehicle which were snapped a few days ago in the port city of Tianjin.
The pictures, which were taken on June 22, show a truck which has been equipped in a rather haphazard manor with a number of solar panels on its roof and bodywork.
NetEase claims that if parked in the sun, the vehicle is capable of building up enough of a charge to be driven, although there is no word as to what kind of range the owner has managed to achieve.
While many netizens praised the truck owner’s passion for innovation, others pointed out that the driver could be fined for tampering with the vehicle and taking it onto the road. It also appears to be lacking a licence plate.
One netizen wrote, “This spirit of innovation should be met with praise, not ridicule.”
“Chengguan and the transportation police are on their way,” said another.
Tesla is clearly eager to get ahead of the rise of homegrown electric vehicles, with rumors that the company is planning to open up a $9 billion manufacturing facility in Shanghai.
