A video showing an intoxicated teacher from Gansu province smacking eight students in front of a classroom has gone viral, provoking a strong backlash online against the teacher.
According to Sina, the incident took place at 9 a.m. on June 26 at a high school in Longnan prefecture. The teacher, surnamed Wang, lashed out at eight students who turned up late to class.
Wang, who is believed to have been drunk at the time, is seen in the video repeatedly hitting both male and female students with hard objects found in the classroom such as books and a broom.
A school spokesman said that the students concerned were sent to a nearby hospital where they received a checkup and were found not to have suffered any serious injuries. Wang is said to have apologized to the students’ parents and hopes that they will return to school after being discharged.
Following the incident, The Ministry of Education launched an investigation and suspended Wang from teaching. A public apology has since been issued to both students and parents.
Netizens on Weibo were quick to pour scorn on Wang and expressed sympathy for the students involved.
“Even if the teacher has a hard time, it doesn’t mean that he can torture students like this,” one wrote.
“The teacher doesn’t deserve to be forgiven. As a teacher, how could he be drunk while he’s teaching? That’s not how a teacher should be,” another said.
“I feel sorry for those students who had to endure such beatings,” one netizen commented.
