Some joke that IKEA is the closest thing that that many Chinese will ever get to visiting a developed country. Well, it seems that with the recent hot weather, Beijingers are taking full advantage of that precious chance.
According to the Beijing Morning News, IKEA’s Siyuanqiao store has become an especially popular destination for locals. People have been constantly taking advantage of the free furniture and air-conditioning that the store provides. During one reporter’s visit to the store, he saw a couple making out in the bed while watching something on their IPad, a man snoozing on a couch with his hands in his pants and even a kid taking a piss by a desk.
One of the interviewees told the reporter that he comes over to the store every afternoon after work to take a quick nap, “It is free. It is cool in here. Everyone does it.”
These rude nap-takers have severely affected other customers’ experiences at the store. “These people have absolutely no manners. Someone’s gotta teach them a lesson,” says Ms. He. However, the manager at the store tells the reporter that he can’t do much about those disturbances. “All displays are meant to be free for everyone to use. We can only remind the customers to stay polite and respectful, but we won’t stop them from lying in beds,” he said.
Last year, an IKEA spokesman came out to allay weary shoppers fears of a reported if unsuccessful ban on sleeping in IKEA stores across China, inviting visitors to snooze away without worry.
Of course, the morally righteous Chinese keyboard warriors exploded over the issue as usual, calling the rude customers a “national disgrace”. But who knows where they sent out those comments from. Chances are, they might be lying on an IKEA couch themselves right now?
Living the dream. baby:
Anyway, locals may say that they come to IKEA for a little rest and relaxation, but we know what they’re really there for.
