Heavy rainstorms have left parts of Wuhan underwater, and that is just fine for some local opportunists eager to make a quick buck.
At one flooded underpass on Wednesday, two men were seen offering to float desperate residents across on their pedicab for 50 RMB a head. NetEase reports that at first everyone believed that the two guys were merely doing a good deed, rather than taking advantage of people by asking for money. Those who were reluctant to pay up, were left standing in knee-deep water.
But hey, ferrying people is hard work. Global Times reports that it was exhausting for the two men to take people all the way across the underpass in their pedicab. Poor guys.
Some netizens thought that there was really nothing wrong with what the two men were doing, while others were appalled with how they earned money from others’ misfortunes.
“Whenever there’s a natural disaster, people instantly seize the opportunity to make money,” one commented in contempt.
“I don’t understand why you’re attacking these two men. It isn’t like they stole anything. The deal is consensual, people pay them and they help the people get across,” argued another.
In a flood, people’s true character gets pushed to the surface, while some people carry others to safety for money, others do it for love. Like this grandpa who takes his kids to school in large wooden basin.
Or this girlfriend who carried her boyfriend across a flooded intersection on her back, to save his leather shoes from harm. Just look at what love does to people!
