In the lead up to last week’s long-awaited court ruling on China’s South China Sea claims, Chinese propaganda officials were working overtime, whipping up new material to educate the world on China’s position on the matter, they even went so far as to ask outsiders for their “opinions.”
In a brief video produced by China Daily titled “Outsider’s perspective: How others see South China Sea,” released just before the ruling, the state media organization talks to seven foreigners who pontificate on why they think the arbitration case is nothing but a “complete waste of time,” all while some funky tunes play on in the background.
The chosen laowai do a good job of covering many of China’s favorite talking points and even vocab. “China has a position… a long-standing position and it’s not budging,” one woman corrects herself.

Actually, many of these foreign experts seem to be right on the money. “China is going to do what China is going to do.” The Hague court ruled against Beijing’s vast claims to the South China Sea last Tuesday, but so far all we’ve seen happen, is iPhones getting smashed and Nike shoe-wearers getting attacked.
It’s just too bad that the court didn’t watch this video before delivering their verdict, would have saved everyone a lot of time.
