Very early Sunday morning, beloved Chinese actor Wang Baoqiang posted a heartfelt statement on Weibo saying that he was divorcing his wife, Ma Rong, for carrying out an affair with his agent that was destroying their family. Wang’s post quickly became the hottest topic on the Chinese internet, generating millions of shares and comments. The vast majority of Weibo users have sided with Wang, calling Ma a “whore,” “prostitute” and “gold digger.”
Ma Rong is now attempting to win some of the Chinese internet to her side in this messy affair. So far, it doesn’t seem to be going very well.
Following her husband’s initial Weibo post accusing her of carrying out an extra-marital affair with his agent, Song Zhe, Ma lashed out at Wang on WeChat, accusing him of abandoning his family and friends. Later, she made a cryptic post on her own Weibo account: “Trying to hide it only makes it worse, the good and evil of it all will reveal itself in due time.” That post has amassed over 4 million comments.
Apparently, the time for revelations is growing nearer, because earlier today Ma sued Wang for defamation of character at a Beijing Chaoyang court. Ma says that she wants Wang to delete his original Weibo post and apologize to her.
To show how serious she is, Ma posted the court documents onto her Weibo account has well. That post has amassed nearly 2 million comments.
However, the vast majority of these millions of comments left under her Weibo posts are not favorably towards her. Most of the top-voted comments attack her, saying that they don’t trust a single thing she says and that she will lose her case. One of the top commenters even alleges that he slept with Ma as well.
Unfortunately for Ma, this doesn’t look like a social media war she will be able to win. Often in affairs, women are cast as the immoral villain, while men get off relatively scot-free. On top of that double standard, Wang Baoqiang is an adored star, not just for his acting, but for his honest demeanor and humility. In his initial Weibo post, he casts himself as a faithful husband and a caring father, who doesn’t want to see his family getting mixed up into what is becoming one of the biggest celebrity scandals of the year.
Yesterday, Wang also made a visit to the courthouse, to officially file for divorce from Ma. Wang has demanded full custody of the couple’s son and daughter and requested that Ma pay child support until both children are 18 years old. While Ma may be the clear loser in the court of public opinion, we’ll have to wait and see what the court of law has to say.
