The “Golden Era of UK-China” relations hasn’t exactly been going so great lately, but we never thought it would come to this.
Last Friday, a 25-year-old Chinese student, studying at the University of Sheffield, named Hang Zhang, was arrested for trying to take a folded knife in his shoe into Buckingham Palace. Hang allegedly said that he wanted to kill the Queen, who wasn’t home at the time.
He also allegedly told police that he was scared that Chinese government agents were following him.
Hang appeared in front of the Westminster Magistrates Court earlier this week. The charge of threatening to kill the Queen was dropped due to mental health issues, The Guardian reports. However, he was accused of possessing an offensive weapon. The court has ordered that he be placed in a mental health facility until his next court appearance on September 14th.
Apparently, there have been some security problems lately at Her Majesty’s place with four major breaches in just the past three months. Including one man with three knives and another drunk guy who scaled the fence and wandered around the garden for 15 minutes.
Maybe everyone is just trying to get their hands on those Peng Liyuan albums?
