Typhoon Meranti made landfall in Fujian province near Xiamen early this morning. As you would expect from this year’s strongest storm, it was pretty terrifying.
Even with wind speeds dropping after the typhoon hit land, gusts were still strong enough to knock over trees, power lines and giant inflatable moons, causing chaos in the flooded streets.
Here are some pictures of the carnage around Fujian:
Meranti arrived after skirting past the southern end of Taiwan yesterday with winds upwards of 370kph. 150,000 people were evacuated ahead of the powerful storm. Taiwanese authorities report that at least 1 person was killed and 51 people were injured by the typhoon.
For Shanghai, this means more rain on the forecast, especially as a second typhoon, Malakas, approaches us.
But at least the worst is over.
