Today cities across the world are banning private cars and promoting public transportation for “World Car-Free Day.” This even includes Taiyuan, the provincial capital of Shanxi.
And it turns out that photos from the streets of Taiyuan today do look rather car-free.
This honestly comes as quite the surprise, because typically photos of Chinese streets during World Car-Free Day look more like this:
And it’s only made more surprising by the fact that Taiyuan isn’t exactly known for government efficiency, austerity or respect for the environment. Instead, it’s better known for city traffic being blocked off by luxury cars and foreign models dressed up as cops.
But, NetEase reports that for at least one day each year, the city government has been gung-ho about promoting more environmentally-friendly modes of transportation. Stories by state media about World Car-Free Day in past years often include Taiyuan.
Still, netizens are somewhat suspicious about the photos showing car-free streets:
“Hey, hey, hey! Clear the street ahead, set up a detour, we have to take some pictures!”
“Once the pictures are taken, everything returns back to normal.”
“Bullshit, you guys went out at 7 a.m.”
