Visitors to the Bund got an extra treat on Monday, snapping pictures and videos as a crazed man chucked some bicycles into the Huangpu River.
The bikes belonged to Mobike, one of the most popular bicycle-sharing startup services that are currently gaining momentum in China. Mobike staff arrived just in time to watch as the man smashed up some of their bikes, managed to escape and then threw a few more into Shanghai’s scenic waterway for good measure.
According to Shanghai Daily, police say that in total the man damaged six Mobikes and cast three more into the murky river below.
It turns out the man is surnamed Su. He is originally from Hong Kong, but has been living, unemployed, in Shanghai for the past two months, CCTV News reports. Apparently, he spends most of his time bashing Mobikes with a hammer that he picked up.
Su told police that he doesn’t regret destroying the bicycles, because “the chips in Mobikes are unsafe and disclose users’ personal information, such as their locations.”
Ummm… he’s not wrong?
