In the wake of an 8 day long crime spree that terrorized one community in Kunming, Yunnan province, police successfully arrested 12 members of a gang of robbers, much to their surprise, the leader of the gang was just 16 years old.
On October 7th at around 2:47 a.m., one man from Hunan province was cruising down the street on his electric scooter with two women seated behind him when suddenly five masked men armed with knives burst out of the bushes from the side of the road and stopped in their path, NetEase reports.
Holding them at knifepoint, the robbers took their money and smartphones, making off with 2,900 RMB in cash, along with two Apple iPhones.
Between October 5th and 13th, a string of seven more late-night robberies occurred in the area. A special police task force was soon organized to track down the gang.
Eventually, utilizing security cameras and some good old-fashioned detective work, police were able to find where the gang was hiding out and carried out an early-morning raid on October 14th, arresting 12 gang members. At least five gang members remain at large.
They were surprised to find out that many of the gang members were minors, including the 16-year-old leader. To dissuade more of this kind of behavior from adolescents and to assure the public that it was safe to walk the streets once again, police paraded 13 of the gang members (wearing masks) through the streets of Kunming on Tuesday.
Parading criminal suspects through the streets for everyone to see has a long history in China. However, following the Cultural Revolution there were laws put in place to try and outlaw the practice. But this doesn’t seem to have worked, every once in a while prostitutes or stone lion stealers are made to walk through the streets in shame.
