A man was shot dead by security guards in Chang’an Town, Dongguan on Wednesday after striking the window of a cash transportation vehicle with a brick.
The victim, a man from Jiangxi Province surnamed Huang, was killed by rubber bullets intended as warning shots after he ignored several warnings stop chasing the vehicle, reported The Beijing News.
Although the rubber bullets were only supposed to have incapacitated Huang, he died on the roadside after receiving emergency medical treatment.
“I Suddenly heard a gunshot and then saw a youth in red fall by the side of the car” a witness told a reporter from The Beijing News, “when I came closer I saw a man in red slumped by the car – police arrived 10 minutes later.”
After police in Chang’an confirmed Huang’s death, local authorities released a statement saying that Huang had attacked the vehicle with bricks, stones, and other objects, smashing a window.
Online, Chinese web users have decried what they believe was an excessive use of force. One commenter said the incident showed “disregard for human life.” Another said that “the armoured vehicle personnel behaved like bullies.”
The company responsible, Junan Transportation, has not yet released a statement.
