The most spectacular time of the year is here again as the high-adrenaline sport of pig-diving returns to rural China.
While too much water is obviously not good for pigs, a little bit is just what they need to be happy and healthy in life. Swimming both improves pigs’ immune systems and provides exercise which adds to the quality and taste of the pork. Meanwhile, a makeshift diving board adds some extra panache.
Huang Demin, a pig farmer from Ningxiang county outside of Changsha, Hunan province, has been putting on this kind of spectacle since at least 2012, turning his farm into a tourism attraction as curious locals gather around to find out if pigs can actually fly.
Nope, they can’t. But, according to Huang, the exercise makes their value go sky-high, selling at a prices three times higher than your regular hog, Sina reports.
Spain has the running of the bulls, China has the swimming of the pigs.
