Like many of us coming to China for the first time, Mei Lun and Mei Huan are having difficulties adapting to the strange language and food, so different from what they grew up on in the United States.
The giant panda twins were born in Atlanta, but at age three they were uprooted from their birthplace and returned to their ancestral homeland in Sichuan, as per agreement with the Chinese government.
They arrived at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding earlier this month and are having trouble letting go of their extravagant “Western lifestyles.” Instead, of eating American biscuits for breakfast, they are now served steamed Chinese bread. Instead of being spoken to in English, staff talk to them in this strange Sichuan dialect. The only thing that they can understand is their names, being deaf to any other command, People’s Daily reports.
Of course, language learning takes time and this kind of case is exactly why it’s so important that Chinese researchers spent five years learning panda language basics.
Anyway, not to worry, because in China, pandas grow on trees.
