[UPDATE: 7 p.m.] The death toll is now up to 67.
At least 40 people were killed earlier this morning at a construction site in Jiangxi province when a platform attached to a power plant’s cooling tower suddenly collapsed.
Rescue work is underway. At least five injured workers were pulled out from the wreckage and are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. With more workers still missing, the death toll is likely to rise even higher, China’s official Xinhua news agency reports.
The accident occurred at around 7 a.m. this morning in the city of Fengcheng. Images from the site show rescuers searching over a massive twisted pile of metal.
Because of lax safety standards, workplace accidents at Chinese facilities are not uncommon. This tragedy comes only a few days after 17 people were killed due to a massive pile-up on an icy expressway in Shanxi province.
