Last week, the Chinese internet exploded when images were posted online by a paparazzi showing married badminton superstar Lin Dan hugging model Zhao Yaqi in a hotel room. To make things even more scandalous, Lin’s wife was pregnant with the couple’s first child at the time that the pictures were taken. In an instant, Lin went from being one of China’s most beloved athletes to one of its most reviled, while Zhao has fared no better.
Earlier this week, the 34-year-old model tried to make amends, reading out an apology amid tears and bows.
“I didn’t think that my own careless decisions could hurt those around me,” Zhao said, adding that this last week had been the worst of her life.
Zhao explained that at first she had tried to run away from her problems, but now she is prepared to face all the consequences of her actions.
“I cannot hope for forgiveness, I can only hope for another chance and hope that my family will be able to return to their normal lives,” she said.
Zhao also denied rumors that Lin had bought her a house and luxury cars as part of the affair.
You can watch part of her apology here with English subtitles from The Star Online:
Lin Dan himself took to Weibo to apologize soon after the scandal exploded online. “As a man, I won’t make any excuses for myself, but my actions have hurt my family and I would like to apologize to them here. Sorry,” he wrote.
Last week, Lin’s wife, Xie Xingfang, also released a statement saying that she will forgive her husband for his affair.
However, it seems that Chinese netizens have been less forgiving.
“Who knew that a model like her had such incredible acting skills?” one Weibo user commented.
“Amazing! A small-time model becomes famous overnight,” wrote another.
“Why hasn’t the male party made an apology like this?” asked another web user.
