No company has brought more travellers to North Korea than Koryo Tours. Since it was established in 1993, this Beijing-based outfit has made films and held exhibitions there, runs a number of humanitarian projects within the country, and has taken tens of thousands of tourists to Pyongyang and beyond.
But for those of us in Shanghai, the fact that Koryo’s all-inclusive tours start and finish in Beijing has always added that extra little bit of unwanted effort in terms of signing up and then hopping aboard the 90-minute flight from The Big Smog to The Hermit Kingdom, despite the fact that Koryo then handles everything else: from food, transport and hotels, to local guides and all the necessary paperwork and permissions.
This year, that particular logistical hurdle finally disappeared when Koryo ran two group tours to North Korea from Shanghai — marking the first-ever time the company had added this route to its offerings. But fret not if those two rare opportunities to visit Pyongyang direct from Pudong passed you by. Such was the success of those pilot tours that Koryo is running another tour from Shanghai this coming January — with a jam-packed itinerary covering the period Jan 27-29 2017.
The tour dates have been timed so you can escape the chaos of Chinese New Year with a mini-break to one of the world’s most fascinating and intriguing countries. And for just ¥8000 you get everything sorted for you: return flights from Pudong to Pyongyang, and back; your DPRK visa (applied for and processed by Koryo); all transport, food and hotels while in North Korea; plus two local Korean guides, a driver, and a representative from Koryo to help you navigate this unique destination.
