A disturbing video has gone viral on the Chinese internet showing a whale being butchered outside of a Jiangxi office building, reportedly for use as dog food.
The video was filmed outside the offices of Risun Solar Energy Technology Corporation in Xinyu city in central Jiangxi province. After it was posted online last Friday, authorities began to look into the matter.
According to the Jiangxi Bureau of Fishery Administration, the whale was a “gift” for the director of Risun from another company boss based in Zhejiang province. It cost 4,000 yuan to transport the eight-ton whale from coastal Zhejiang to landlocked Jiangxi province.
Despite the high price tag, authorities claim that the whale was cut up in order to feed animals like “dogs.” An earlier report claimed that the whale’s meat was divided up between workers to bring back home as a year-end bonus.
In China, all whales are at least second-class nationally-protected animals, though that hasn’t stopped them from being caught by fishermen and slaughtered in the past. More frequently, it is whale sharks that are butchered.
