The State Grid Sichuan Electric Power Corporation won “most innovative” in a CCTV talent show earlier this month with a catchy little ditty called “Electricity is Coming” about bringing electricity to remote regions of western China.
However, at least one viewer noticed that that he had heard the song before — on Broadway.
It turns out that “Electricity is Coming” is a direct ripoff of “Hello” the opening number to the massively popular musical The Book of Mormon, featuring the same tune, as well as strikingly similar stage design and choreography.
Watch for yourself, here’s “Hello.”
And here’s “Electricity is Coming” (starts around 12:37).
It’s really only missing the satire.
