In an inauspicious sign for the upcoming Chinese New Year, six people were killed in explosions at a fireworks store in Yueyang, Hunan province on Tuesday evening.
Terrifying videos of the resulting blaze which consumed a four-story apartment building began going viral on Chinese social media late last night. Firefighters were able to rescue one survivor from the inferno and extinguish fires by midnight. Remains of six victims were found in apartments above the shop.
According to state media, preliminary investigations show that the explosions were caused when one impatient customer set off a firework he had just purchased near to the store, igniting a chain reaction that went on for over an hour.
Both the shop owner and the customer who purchased the fireworks have been detained by police and three local officials have been removed from their posts.
