Meet Cui Yubo. He cleans up the freezing streets of Hulunbuir in northernmost Inner Mongolia.
Cui’s wife passed away last year following a long battle with illness. He hopes that through his job as a street sweeper he can make enough money to pay off the massive amount of debt he accumulated from relatives and friends trying to pay his wife’s medical bills.
His monthly salary is 1,500 yuan ($220).
Photos of Cui’s snow-covered face as he shovels garbage with the temperature outside at minus 38 degrees Celsius have tugged on the heartstrings of Chinese netizens across the country with at least some suggesting that he really ought to get paid more for his work.
“Life is not easy,” one web user pointed out.
