Chinese mainland tourists made a record 6.15 million trips abroad this Spring Festival holiday, escaping overseas from the usual domestic tourist hell that their country turns into.
That figure is up 7% from last year. It’s also a bit more than the 6 million trips that Ctrip estimated a few months before the holiday.
Chinese tourists flocked in large numbers to favorite destinations like Thailand and Japan to experience different cultures, as well as different shopping malls. While there, they appear to have been on their best behavior with no incidents of national embarrassment to report.
Unfortunately, not everyone had a fun time abroad. In Malaysia, a boat carrying 28 Chinese nationals sank off the island of Borneo. Most were rescued after spending more than a day adrift in the sea, but at least three were killed.
