The manager of a foot massage parlor in Tiantai, Zhejiang province has been detained by police following a horrific fire which killed 18 people on Sunday afternoon.
The fire broke out at around 5:26 p.m., China’s official Xinhua news agency reports. It took firefighters about two hours to extinguish the inferno. In the meantime, 8 people were killed inside the parlor, while an additional 10 died later at the hospital.
Yesterday, eyewitness videos of the massive fire went viral on Chinese social media. They show thick black smoke rising up from the burning building and panicked people desperately jumping out of the second-floor window to safety.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
