At least 28 people are dead and 16 more are injured after a tour bus veered off a highway and overturned on the side of a road near Taipei on Monday night.
Taiwan’s Central News Agency reports that it is believed that 44 people including the driver were inside the bus when it flipped over. The passengers are all believed to be local tourists.
Pictures from the scene of the crash show the bus lying on its side with rescuers checking over the site for survivors. Authorities deployed 20 ambulances to the scene to help with the rescue.
Last July, a Taiwan tour bus burst into flames on a highway near Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport, killing all 26 people on board, including 24 tourists from the mainland. Later, investigators determined that the bus driver had purposefully doused the bus with gasoline and set it on fire before crashing.
