Always wanted to become a professional acrobat? Well, on head up to Konglou village this summer and turn that dream into a reality.
The tiny village in western Shandong province is a well-known center for acrobatic mastery. Each year, people from around the country travel here to train their strength, dexterity and skills. While some of these trainees have grand ideals, most just hope to be able to make a decent enough living. In the village, students train for one show for two or three months before finally returning to their hometown and joining a local troupe where they can make 100 to 300 yuan per show.
Photos from the village have recently been published online, showing students as young as 6 years old training their skills, causing netizens to lament about the bitterness of life in rural China.
