After her father was jailed and her mother remarried, little Wang Anna was left to take care of her ailing grandmother and great-grandmother all by herself.
Anna’s grandmother suffers from severe arthritis, while her great-grandmother is 92 years old. They are both nearly bedridden, leaving the 5-year-old girl to handle most of the housework and cooking each day. Not to mention washing and cleaning her elderly relatives and taking them for short walks.
When she was just 3 months old, Anna’s dad was put behind bars. Her mom moved in with the in-laws, but eventually found a new husband, abandoning Anna to live with her two elderly relatives in a simple house in rural Guizhou province.
To help out the unusual family of three, neighbors often stop by to give them some vegetables from their farms. Still, Anna has to cook up the ingredients herself.
While Anna may be as tough as 5-year-old can possibly be, more than anything, she still misses her mommy and daddy.
Sadly, Anna’s situation is not unique in China. Last year, the story of a 7-year-old girl left to take care of her ailing grandparents after her father was killed and her mother abandoned her went viral on the Chinese internet.
