A man was tragically crushed to death last month after walking in front of a train at the Nanjing South Railway Station. Now, his family wants 800,000 yuan in compensation.
Surveillance footage from the railway station shows the man walking slowly in front of the train apparently trying to reach the station platform. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t quite make it. The lower half of his body became trapped in between the high-speed train and the station platform.
Rescuers arrived quickly, trying desperately to free the man. In a video, they can be heard telling the man to “keep breathing” and “don’t sleep” before covering up his face from onlookers as he begins to lose consciousness. Eventually, they used a jackhammer to drill away the station platform. Unfortunately, by the time they pulled him out, it was too late. A doctor pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The railway station said that the man was fully responsible for the accident, but had provided 70,000 yuan to cover funeral expenses out of humanitarian considerations.
However, the man’s family believes that they deserve more, much more. On Tuesday, they filed a lawsuit asking for 800,000 yuan in compensation from the Shanghai Railway Bureau and Nanjing Railway Station.
“I suggest that the Shanghai Railway Bureau and the Nanjing Railway Station should file a counter-claim, asking the family to assume responsibility for the train, the platform maintenance costs, the passenger delays and the psychological damages!” one Weibo user commented after reading the news.
“70,000 isn’t enough? I wouldn’t have given them a cent,” writes another.
