60-year-old Xi Tiangen has won the respect of web users across China for managing to take care of his family for four decades as a farmer despite not having any legs.
After losing both of his legs in a freak accident when he was just 19 years old, Xi began putting his hands to good use, working on his family’s farm in central Henan province.
But things became even tougher for Xi in 1986 when his father passed away, leaving Xi to take care of his elderly mother and mentally handicapped brother all by himself. Along with the farm work, Xi also did the laundry and cooked meals for his family.
Xi continued to take good care of his two relatives until his mother died in 2006, followed by his brother in 2015. Afterward, Xi came to live at his cousin’s home where he insisted on not staying idle, continuing to help with the farm work.
Because of how much he has to use them over the years to get around, Xi’s fingers have become permanently curled.
Recently, after hearing about his story, some generous locals have started offering some small donations to Xi, allowing him to live on a monthly allowance of 130 RMB. Many Chinese netizens said that they hoped Xi could retire soon and enjoy the time off he so richly deserves.
