Rather than shell out a fortune for a traditional Chinese wedding convoy of limos and luxury cars, one young couple in Zhengzhou decided to just bike to their wedding instead.
On Tuesday morning, the 28-year-old groom and 50 of the couple’s closest friends and family members arrived at a local hotel riding green bicycles rented through one of China’s many bike-sharing services. There, the 26-year-old bride hopped on to a bike of her own, decorated with colorful flowers, and away they went to the wedding site just a few blocks away.
According to Dahe Daily, the couple were college sweethearts who had both moved to Zhengzhou to find work after graduation. Just starting their careers, they quickly realized that they couldn’t afford some of the more ostentatious flourishes that have become common in weddings in China.
Traditionally, the groom is supposed to pick up the bride and take her to the place where the wedding is being held. In the past, couples have been known to hire out Lamborghinis, Rolls-Royces and transport trucks to make that important journey.
However, this young couple calculated that hiring cars might cost them 3,000 to 5,000 yuan. Meanwhile, they only spent 50 yuan by using shared bicycles.
Chinese netizens have generally cheered the couple’s sensible mode of transportation, though more than a few couldn’t help but wonder if in fact the bike-sharing service actually paid for their wedding — or if there was really a wedding at all.
