The more attractive face of China’s hated public security force was on display in Hangzhou over the long May Day holiday weekend as an all-female patrol squad was dispatched to stamp out unruly behavior with an alluring smile.
Made up of young university graduates, the elite female force was set up last year prior to the city hosting the G20 Summit with the mission of welcoming visitors to Hangzhou and making sure that they didn’t do anything “uncivilized” during their stay. According to the local public security bureau, so far the squad has assisted 13,500 tourists while also stopping 8,400 instances of bad behavior.
Dressed in berets, dark glasses and sleek uniforms, the women have become a sort of tourist attraction themselves at Hangzhou’s famous West Lake with admirers snapping photos of the officers along with the scenery.
The squad appears to be an attempt to change the image of China’s infamous chengguan, public security officers who are notorious for going to great extremes to keep the peace through intimidation and violence.
Plus, they aren’t nearly as good-looking.
